George Butler, Jr., 88, of New Hope, passed away Thursday.
He was Preceded in Death By, parents, George B Butler and Marilee Dilworth Butler of New Hope, sister, Annie Louise Butler of Indianapolis, Indiana, and wife of 51 years, Lorraine Mynatt Butler of New Hope.
He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Barbara B Butler of New Hope, son and wife, William Rex Butler and Kathy of Houston, TX, daughter, Julie Butler Brumbelow of Dalton ,GA, grandchildren, Rachel Butler Garzonie of Dallas TX, Nicole Butler Morgan of Tallahasee, FL, Laura Grace Brumbelow, MariLee Brumbelow, Alex Claire Brumbelow of Dalton, GA., step grandson, Joey Brumbelow of Gray, GA., great grandchildren, Casen David Gibson of Dalton, GA., sister, Corinne Butler Blackwell of Birmingham, AL, and niece, Denisha Blackwell of Trussville, AL.
George served in the Navy during WWII. He graduated with a BS from Auburn University and received a MS from the University of Oklahoma. He worked as an Engineer at Allis Chalmers and was part of the team that developed the first mechanical cotton picker. He worked at NASA for 26 years where he held the position of Head of Quality and Assurance and worked on several projects including the Apollo program and the Space Shuttle. He also worked on the investigation committee into the Challenger accident. Afterwards he worked as a consultant to the Space industry until his retirement in 1994. He was a resident of New Hope for almost all of his life. He was greatly loved by his family and friends. He will be missed.

Visitation will be Friday 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at New Hope Funeral Home. Services will be held at New Hope Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday at 11:00 AM with Rev. Micheal Carpenter officiating.
Interment will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
