Marie Hornbuckle Smith

Marie Hornbuckle Smith went to her Heavenly home on October 14, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Simpson Sawyer Smith (Simp) father, Charles N. Hornbuckle, mother, Ida Lee Bell Hornbuckle, daughter, Ann Smith Vines. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Robert Bryan Smith, and great-grandson, Bryan Sawyer Smith, sisters, Ola, Mary, Martha, L.B., Opal, and Sarah, brothers, William, Houston, and James.

She is survived by her daughter, Susie (Charles) Stewart of Birmingham, and son, Dr. Bob Smith of Metarie, LA. She is survived by her grandchildren, Dr. Greg (Bradley) Lansdell, Dr. Deanne (Tyler) Vail, Jason (Amy) Smith, Stephaney  Smith, and Chase Stewart. She is also survived by her eight great-grandchildren, Lauren and Matthew Lansdell, Griffin, Carter, and Drew Vail, Mimi and Devon Smith. Also, she is survived by her one remaining sibling, Nancy (Ed) Fannin of Melbourne, FL, several nieces, nephews and their families and a host of other family members and friends, all of whom she dearly loved.

Marie grew up in New Hope, Alabama and lived there most of her life. She was a devout Christian and served faithfully as a member of New Hope Baptist Church and later, First Baptist Church of Huntsville. She and Simp were married 69 wonderful years and were devoted to each other. She was an avid Alabama football fan and a long time Braves baseball fan.

She loved serving other people and was active in starting the Senior Center in New Hope. Marie was a wonderful cook and was always baking a cake or pie to take to someone in need. After Simp passed away, Marie moved to Birmingham to be near her daughter and lived in Birmingham until her death on October 14, 2014.

The family wishes to express a warm and heartfelt thank you to all of the wonderful staff at Columbiana Health and Rehab where Marie resided for the last 4 years. She loved each one of the staff and kept the laughing all the time. We were blessed to have Marie in our lives and we will miss her laughter and humor, her good food, her beautiful smile and her loving arms.

Visitation will be Saturday 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at New Hope Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery, Saturday at 12:00 pm with Rev. Cody Gilliam officiating.

Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
