Johnny R. Stephens

July 11, 1933 – August 28, 2011

Johnny R. Stephens, 78, of Scottsboro, passed away Sunday.

He was preceded in death by father, Will Dave Stephens, and mother, Ista Hornbuckle Stephens.

Surviving are wife, Jane Killingsworth Stephens of Scottsboro, son, Vernon (Joleen) Stephens of Union Grove, son, Wendell (Teresa) Goins of Section, daughter, Lee Ann (Tim) Matsos of Auburn, daughter, Rena (Richard) Kern of Cocoa Beach, FL, daughter, Rhonda (Mike) Davis of Opelika, 13 grandchildren,14 great-grandchildren, brother, W.D. Stephens, sister, Mildred Lemley, sister, Margaret Keel, and several nieces and nephews

Visitation will be Tuesday 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at New Hope Funeral Home. Services will be held at New Hope Funeral Home Chapel, Wednesday at 2:00 pm with Danny Bellomy officiating.

Interment will follow in the Byrd Cemetery.

Johnny was blessed to have a very special grandson, Daniel Coffey who devoted his life to caring for his Paw-paw.  When Johnny became to weak to walk it was then that Daniel carried him.  Daniel’s dedication to his Paw-paw was truly an act of unconditional love.

    I have known you for many years. I have enjoyed fishing with you, listening to the stories of your life and answering your questions about my travels. I never knew a reason to dislike you. Then, you gave me a reason to love you when due to a mess of circumstances you raised my son.

    I hope he grows to be even a part of the man I knew you to be.

    In your shadow he became a man! Thank you.
