Clarence B. “Bud” Mitchell of Grant, Alabama, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2011 at Shepherd’s Cove after a brief illness. He was born August 29, 1924 to Clarence M. and Annie Bridges Mitchell, the second of five children and their only son. He and Ruth Brooks of New Hope, Alabama, were married August 26, 1948.
Mr. Mitchell was a master carpenter and built dozens of homes in Marshall and Madison counties. Although carpentry was his livelihood, farming was his passion. Cotton was his favorite crop and he loved to see his acres of cotton plants blooming across his fields.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ruth Brooks Mitchell; a son, Kenneth Mitchell, of Grant; a daughter, Pennie Mitchell Cushing (Mark) of Columbus, Georgia; and two grandchildren, Allison Sellers of Orlando, Florida and Bethany Sellers Parker (Larry) of Baker City, Oregon. He also leaves three sisters, Lillian Botos (Tony) of Grant, and Euthema Goodson and Olivia Rieveley (Glen), both of Chattanooga, Tennessee, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by a son, Roger Mitchell, and two sisters, Syble Gwin and Floreeta Partrick.
Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23, at New Hope Funeral Home. A chapel service will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m., conducted by Bro. Clayton Tuggle, Bro. Barry Hallman and Bro. Marvin McCormick, with special music presented by Joyce Cameron. Burial will be at New Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers will be J.F. Prince, R.E. Martin, Ronnie Troup, Glen Jimerson, Steve Brooks and Ricky Brooks. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Henryville Methodist Church, where Mr. Mitchell was a faithful member for many years.
In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully acknowledges memorial gifts to Shepherd’s Cove (Hospice of Marshall County) or Henryville Methodist Church.
