Joseph E. Hill, 86, of Owens Cross Roads, passed away Tuesday.
Joe was drafted the 29th day of August 1944 and attended basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama. His military occupation specialty was Rifleman 745 and he qualified on a 30 caliber machine gun and an M-1 grand rifle. He was deployed to the Rhineland Central European Command with Company E, 101st infantry Battalion, 26th Division 3rd Army. He served until the 9th of July 1946. He was awarded the EAME Service metal with two bronze service stars, the good conduct medal, The WWII victory medal, and The European Occupation medal. His highest rank achieved was Sergeant. Joe retired from NASA in 1980.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Lois Hill, two sons-in-law, Roger Savoie and Bobby Taymon, 4 brothers and 5 sisters.
Surviving are daughter, Brenda (Butch) Holland of Owens Cross Roads, daughter, Barbara Taymon of Owens Cross Roads, daughter, Sandra Savoie of Round Rock, TX, daughter, Martha (Jeff) DeArmond of Owens Cross Roads, daughter, Lisa (Barry) Laffew of Georgetown, TX, son, Larry (Jackie) Hill of Owens Cross Roads, son, Rayburn (Joy) Hill of Dallas, GA, son, Ross (Trena) Hill of Owens Cross Roads, son, Leland (Deborah) Hill of Somerville, seventeen grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and special friend, Ruth Hallmark.
Visitation will be Thursday 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at New Hope Funeral Home. Services will be held at New Hope Funeral Home Chapel, Friday at 2:00 PM with Rev. Doug Browner officiating.
Interment will follow in the Moon Cemetery with military honors.
